AAC (assistive and augmentative communication) hardware is a specialized computer or tablet that runs preloaded software to generate speech. It offers preset buttons for frequently used words and a keyboard view for typing. Users can choose preset voices or specific voice banked voices, and message banking can be incorporated with speech through buttons or automatic population.

These devices can cost between 5 and 8 thousand dollars, and insurance coverage may vary. It is recommended review this with your insurance and an AAC company representative. SLP's who specialize in AAC devices can also provide assistance. Here is a list of some common companies that distribute hardware in the United States.
